The America's Best-in-State Hospitals 2026 ranking awards the top hospitals across the United States. Compiled for the third time in collaboration with Newsweek, the ranking features lists for all 50 states as well as the District of Columbia. The evaluation is based on four key data pillars: (1) hospital quality metrics, (2) hospital reputation, (3) patient experience, and (4) the Statista PROMs implementation survey.

Project Details
About the project
The third edition of America’s Best Hospitals by State 2026 is based on a comprehensive evaluation that combines multiple data sources and perspectives:

Hospital Quality Metrics – Analysis included data from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), performance benchmark data from Medicare fee-for-service claims (sourced from Arcadia), the American Hospital Association (AHA) Annual Survey of Hospitals Database, and accreditation data from various sources.

Hospital Reputation – From July to August 2025, a nationwide online survey was conducted among medical professionals (including doctors, hospital managers, and healthcare workers) in cooperation with Newsweek.

Patient Experience – Results from the standardized HCAHPS (Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems) survey, which measures patients’ experiences following a recent hospital stay or procedure, were considered.

Statista PROMs Implementation – Hospitals that participated in Statista’s PROMs implementation survey received an additional score to reflect their adoption of Patient Reported Outcome Measures, an increasingly important metric in healthcare evaluation.
All U.S. hospitals with a capacity of at least 50 beds were eligible to be considered for the ranking, except those with a 1-star CMS rating. More than 5,000 hospitals were evaluated, and 800 were recognized in the final ranking. Results were presented in 51 lists: one for each of the 50 states plus a dedicated list for the District of Columbia.

01 Concept
For our healthcare projects, we provide comprehensive insights into the quality of healthcare providers and facilities through our rankings. These rankings help patients make informed, data-driven decisions about their medical needs. They also give healthcare facilities a composite benchmark to understand their position relative to their peers. Integrating data from diverse performance indicators and expert knowledge, we deliver rankings that recognize excellence and promote high standards in healthcare.
02 Data Collection
Our team of analysts employs a range of data sources including questionnaires collecting insights from professionals and data submitted directly by hospitals through the Statista PROMS Implementation and Smart Hospitals Maturity surveys. Publicly available data on quality metrics and patient experience are also assessed. In collaboration with a global board of experts, we are continuously advancing our methodologies to compile the most trusted healthcare rankings.
03 Evaluation
Healthcare analysts at Statista Rankings apply advanced scoring models comprising numerous data pillars to ensure robust and reliable results. Evaluation relies largely on diverse quality indicators and survey results, with pillar weightings adjusted per project based on data availability. These tailored models are used to calculate scores for each facility and determine the final rankings.
04 Quality Assurance
As we are committed to quality, every ranking undergoes a thorough verification process to validate the data used and ensure that the top healthcare providers are recognized. Our experienced team of analysts conducts extensive research on a range of healthcare topics and facilities—including hospitals, nursing homes, and doctors—guaranteeing the utmost reliability in Statista's rankings.
