Project Details
About the project
Now in its 7th edition, the America's Best Startup Employers 2026 ranking was created with the goal of providing recognition for great startup workplaces.
Companies were evaluated based on several key performance indicators, gathered through social listening and desk research, and comprising over 7 million datapoints.
To be considered for the ranking, companies had to be headquartered in the USA, founded between the years 2016 and 2023, employ at least 50 people and exhibit a startup structure. Spin-offs of large corporations without a significant amount of external funding were not considered.
Out of the 3000 organizations evaluated, the final list recognizes the top 500 startup employers in the US, ranked according to our scoring model and grouped into 20 industries.
Scoring
Identifying America’s top startup employers
We ranked employers using a scoring model that combines three research dimensions:
Company reputation score
Calculated using comprehensive web and social media monitoring over a three-month period, focused on employer attractiveness and employer branding. We defined key workplace dimensions and tested relevant search terms (e.g., employee engagement, corporate culture). Results reflect employer reputation based on reach, virality, and volume of relevant mentions, as well as the sentiment expressed in those posts.
Employee satisfaction score
Based on KPIs tied to employee satisfaction, collected from online platforms and company websites. We gathered and assessed employee reviews, average tenure, and overall employer relevance. We also evaluated the presence and quality of predefined criteria across topics such as benefits, culture and values, flexible working hours, and workplace mobility. Employee satisfaction is especially critical for early-stage companies: happy employees are more productive and often become a company’s strongest advocates and brand ambassadors.
Growth score
For many startups, the core objective is growth: important not only to founders and shareholders, but to employees as well. Growth creates opportunities to learn new skills and take on greater responsibility. We researched and evaluated growth using multiple signals and sources, including website traffic, headcount growth, and job openings.
METHODOLOGY
How we work
Learn about our general approach to creating employer rankings. Further details about how the ranking was created can be found in the America's Best Startup Employers 2026 methodology.
01 Concept
For our employment projects, we evaluate and rank the world’s leading employers, highlighting organizations that excel in fostering positive work environments and sustainable growth. Our rankings help job seekers make informed career choices while providing companies with a benchmark to assess their standing in the global job market.
02 Data collection
The selection of startups to be shortlisted and evaluated is based on the age and size of the companies as well as the location and market focus in the US, high web traffic and independency from other companies. A social listening campaign is launched and constantly monitored to collect mentions. Incoming data is cleaned and prepared for analysis. Additional KPI data is collected through publicly available company information to effectively measure the reputation, growth and employee satisfaction of the selected startups.
03 Evaluation
The prepared data is analyzed with a proven scoring model to create a ranking of the highest rated startup employer brands.
04 Quality Assurance
For each potential award-winning employer, company information is researched and eligibility for the list is confirmed. This step serves as quality assurance and is presented as information in the publication.
