Project Details
About the project
For 25 years, hundkatzemaus has accompanied people and their pets – with the aim of making responsible pet ownership, care, and species-appropriate living visible.
Since 2023, Statista and hundekatzemaus have been conducting an annual survey of top pet care brands in Germany, asking: Which pet care brands do you use, and which of them would you recommend? Based on this survey, we compiled the 4th edition of Germany’s Top Pet Care Brands 2026.
Scope of brands considered:
To be eligible for consideration in the ranking, brands had to fulfil certain requirements depending on the category. To rank for a product category, availability across multiple retail platforms, either online or offline, or via an own online shop in Germany was a basic requirement. For the brick-and-mortar retail category, only retailers and service providers represented in multiple German regions were included in the list. For the online categories, only retailers and service providers that are predominantly present online were included in the list.
For every category, the most relevant brands were considered based on brand recognition, revenue or market capitalization. Additionally, survey respondents were able to evaluate other brands with the free text entry field.
All awarded products and services had to be freely accessible to consumers in Germany. Prescription medicines were not within the scope of the study. This applies in particular to the categories "Calming aids" for both dogs and cats.
Results:
The final list recognizes the top 145 pet care brands with 309 awards across six main categories of Furnishings/Furniture, Retail, Health, Food, Care and Accessories.
DEEP DIVE
What the Top Pet Care Brands 2026 ranking reveals
Familiar brands, new favorites:
Four years after the project launched, one thing is clear: brand trust in the pet world is shifting. Some brands have held onto their top positions for years, while at the same time new names are appearing on pet owners’ recommendation lists.
Pet owners’ buying behavior is changing:
The fact that in many categories it is not only large but also smaller, specialized providers that lead shows: owners’ trust increasingly comes from personal experience, not from mere brand awareness. Especially in sensitive areas such as pet health and pet food, it becomes clear: recommendations are based on genuine conviction, not habit.
Specialist retailers remain in demand:
In the category “Retail – Offline (all animal types)” it becomes clear: brick-and-mortar providers remain important – especially when range, advice and trust come together.
ZOO & Co reaches the top spot with a score of 84.94, closely followed by Kölle Zoo (83.44), which was likewise named by many participants as a reliable go-to. Fressnapf, zookauf and Raiffeisen-Markt also scored highly.
The results show that many owners decide very deliberately where to shop – it’s not just price but above all quality and trust in the provider that are decisive.
Why this survey is more than a ranking:
The Top Pet Care Brands 2026 don’t stand for popularity alone – above all, they show what really matters to owners today.
Quality, trust, transparency, and value for money – all of this feeds into the ranking results. The fact that so many participants consciously place importance on these aspects makes the results especially meaningful.
Responsibility begins before the purchase:
Good products and trustworthy brands matter – but the biggest decision happens before that:
Owning a pet means taking on responsibility, often for many years. People who make that commitment thoughtfully don't just choose their pet carefully – they are also likely to choose the brands they trust carefully too.
Scoring
Identifying Germany’s Top Pet Care Brands
Our scoring model weights independently collected survey data from pet owners in Germany. The data is divided into several scoring dimensions. 50% of each brand's final score was based on respondents' willingness to recommend it.
The other 50% was broken down into four aspects: trust, quality, transparency and value for money. Each aspect was rated on a scale from 1 to 5, where 1 means very poor and 5 means excellent.
The top 3,5, or 10 brands that achieved the highest scores in each category were named "Germany’s Top Pet Care Brands 2026."
Trust
The trust score measures whether respondents trust that a brand is safe and effective for their pets.
Quality
The quality score measures the overall quality of the products/services received.
Transparency
The transparency score measures whether a brand provides respondents with all the information they need about its products and services.
Value for money
The value for money score measures the relationship between the price of a product or service and the quality or performance received for it.
METHODOLOGY
How we work
Learn more about our approach to creating the pet care brand ranking in the Germany's Top Pet Care Brands 2026 methodology.
01 Concept
In this project, we rate and rank Germany’s leading pet care brands and highlight products and services that surveyed pet owners have used themselves and would recommend. Our ranking helps identify the brands and providers that consumers trust and value.
02 Data collection
For data collection, our team of analysts develops a detailed online questionnaire in which participants anonymously share their satisfaction with brands they have experience with. In total, the survey took around 8 minutes. The field phase took place from March to April of 2026. Through cooperation with leading online access panels, suitable participants are identified and surveyed independently of potentially awarded brands. Additionally, participation in the survey was open to the audience of “hundkatzemaus”. The survey responses are then checked for quality and validity (interview duration, deviations, inconsistencies) and sorted accordingly.
03 Evaluation
To evaluate the survey data, we apply a scoring model that combines respondents’ willingness to recommend a brand they have used with their satisfaction in specific individual aspects.
04 Quality Assurance
For every potentially awarded brand, background information is researched, and eligibility for the list is verified. This step serves as quality assurance, and the results are stated in the publication.
Partnership
Our media partner
VOX has been on air since 1993 and is one of the three most successful private television broadcasters in Germany. Based in Cologne, the channel offers a broad and high-quality entertainment program.
